Community of Practice

“When school communities work together to create safe, inclusive and connected environments, student wellbeing and learning outcomes are enhanced.”
- Australian Student Wellbeing Framework, 2018

What is a Community of Practice?

A Community of Practice is a network of schools that come together with a shared commitment to improving social, emotional and behavioural outcomes. It operates through regular team training, structured collaboration, as well as guided coaching and feedback that supports implementation over time. Members engage in shared problem-solving, goal setting, systems development, and data review, while also learning from the experiences of other schools. The community fosters collective expertise, accountability, and continuous improvement—ensuring that schools are not working in isolation, but supported by a broader system of learning, practice, and implementation support.

Why is it beneficial to participate in a Community of Practice?

Being part of a Community of Practice provides schools with ongoing support, shared learning, and collaborative problem-solving as they strengthen their social, emotional and behaviour support systems. This collective approach allows schools to learn from one another’s successes and challenges, access evidence-based tools and coaching, and stay focused on sustainable implementation. By working alongside other committed schools, teams build confidence, deepen their understanding of MTSS-B, and maintain momentum for change—all while contributing to a network that shares a common goal: creating safe, supportive environments where every student can thrive.

How does the Community of Practice work?

1

Initial Needs Assessment

Each school participates in an initial needs assessment to identify their unique challenges and requirements. The data collected from this assessment is aggregated and used to develop a bespoke training and support program.

2

Team Training

Educators that are leading this work will receive training on core MTSS-B systems and practices that address the identified needs and develop an actionable plan for their school.

3

Coaching Support

Coaching support enhances selected school members' skills and fosters a community of support with other coaches, building local capacity to sustain and lead the implementation process.

4

School-level Technical Assistance

Technical assistance provides customised on-site support from an experienced consultant to guide each school's development and implementation of their MTSS-B framework.

What content areas are assessed and supported as part of the MTSS-B Community of Practice?

The Community of Practice supports schools to assess and implement critical features of effective behaviour and wellbeing systems across all three tiers. This includes strengthening practices at both the school-wide and at the classroom level to ensure all students receive the support they need to succeed. In addition, schools will receive support to develop or refine, and implement tier 2 supports to address students with at-risk wellbeing needs. For a detailed overview of the professional development topics that are assessed and supported through the Community of Practice, please see our Professional Development Outline.
